No Such Thing as an Embarrassing Story: A Growth Mindset

Allow me to preface by acknowledging that I stumble during important meetings, make comments I wish I could have articulated differently, and forget that it is acceptable to take a moment before reacting. Pausing and embracing moments of silence is permissible. This brings me to a concept I have been considering: "no story is an embarrassing story". This idea became clear to me during a recent business pitch when I was asked an unexpected question.

During this pitch for new business, I was unexpectedly asked how comfortable I was coaching senior people. It was not something I had previously contemplated, nor had I prepared a response. At that point in my career journey, I did not anticipate such a question. Instead of pausing, I candidly replied, "I am more comfortable coaching people who are new leaders. It would be a lie to say otherwise." Gasps! Initially, I felt embarrassed. Immediately I questioned myself and my ability in one response that I sabotaged the opportunity for new business.

Upon reflecting on that response repeatedly, I realized that throughout the majority of my career, I have led and coached individuals senior to myself. The reason behind my initial answer is that I derive joy from watching younger individuals evolve and find their footing. It is not that I could not or was not capable enough. I understood that my response tied directly back to my desire to help others grow and succeed.

The lesson here is not about why I responded as I did, but rather that every potentially embarrassing story is an opportunity for growth.

Embracing moments of vulnerability and recognizing them as opportunities for growth is crucial. Often, we fear judgment or failure, but these moments reveal our strengths.

Viewing these experiences as chances to refine skills helps cultivate resilience. Sharing our less-than-perfect moments inspires others and fosters a culture of learning over perfection.

Embarrassing stories teach valuable lessons. They help us grow, build character, and face future challenges confidently. Let's embrace them, learn from them, and strive to become better versions of ourselves, both personally and professionally.
