Authentically You: Embracing Your Core Values at Work
Have you ever found yourself acting in a way that felt completely out of character? Like you were wearing someone else's shoes, or you didn't recognize the person you were becoming? It's almost like an out-of-body experience, where the rational part of you is watching the reactive part and wondering, "Who is that?" This often happens when we can't be our authentic selves. We don't feel heard, we don't feel like we belong.
I'm naturally an early riser, and before I had kids, I loved getting to work early. But I remember a time at a job when I was penalized during an evaluation for coming in early and leaving early. It was frustrating because other colleagues had the freedom to come in later and work later, but we were all putting in the same hours. For some reason, staying late was perceived as working harder. This experience had a ripple effect on me. I no longer saw my core values reflected in my workplace, and I struggled to show up authentically. My behavior changed, and in stressful situations, I didn't recognize myself.
You've probably been in a professional development session where the topic of core values came up. I know I have, more times than I can count. Despite being a frequent topic, understanding and living by your core values is crucial for showing up authentically at work. Recently, I've started taking this seriously, and I've seen significant improvements in my overall quality of life.
Start small. Post the three values that are most important to you on your computer screen. Reflect daily on how you're living those values—or not. Remember that values can change as you grow and your life priorities shift. If your values aren't reflected in your workplace, don't hesitate to look for a new position. Just make sure you discuss your values during your next interview. Ensure you can show up to work authentically and enjoy the benefits of being yourself both at home and at work.
